Here's a clearer explanation of the process:

  • Preparation at Port of Loading:One or more flat rack containers (with no side walls or roof) are laid down in the ship's cargo hold or on deck to form a stable, level platform. This "platform" serves as a pseudo-container base for the cargo, enabling safe securing and weight distribution.
  • Loading the Cargo: The oversized cargo is carefully lifted and placed onto the flat rack platform using shore-based lifting equipment. Specialized lashing and securing equipment is used to fasten the cargo directly to the flat racks and/or the vessel structure.
  • Securing for Sea Transport: The cargo is secured to meet IMO and port regulations (e.g., IMO CSS Code, port stowage plans). The container and cargo are often listed separately on the Bill of Lading, with flat racks treated as loose equipment rather than functioning containers.
  • Discharge at Port of Destination:On arrival, the cargo is unlashed and separated from the flat racks. The flat racks and the cargo are then unloaded independently, often requiring coordination between crane operators and stevedores.
